The Heart of Socialism. Selected Humanitarian Writings

A selection of writings by one of the most interesting left-wing English authors from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Surprisingly mature, ahead of his time, Salt addressed the issues of broadly understood social and inter-species justice and the relationship of man to nature, as well as the role
of morality and politics in life. The essays collected in this anthology express the ideology of
humanitarianism, which can be reduced to the statement that we should treat everyone humanely – both human and non-human. Published by Warsaw University Publishing.

HENRY S. SALT (1851-1939) – English writer and social activist, one of the first theoreticians of the developed concept of animal rights and ideologist of humanitarianism. He took up the workers’ issue, fought to limit hunting, slaughter and experiments on animals, agitated for pacifism, supported suffragettes and designed reforms of criminal law and the penitentiary system. The Humanitarian League, led by him, was the main force of the ethical trend in British socialism in the early 20th century.

CEZ​​ARY BŁASZCZYK – assistant professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw in Poland. In his scientific work, he deals with the connections between law and politics, with particular emphasis on animal protection.

Wybór pism jednego z najciekawszych lewicowych autorów angielskich z przełomu XIX i XX w. Zdumiewająco dojrzale, wyprzedzając swoje czasy, Salt podjął w nich zagadnienia szeroko pojętej sprawiedliwości społecznej i międzygatunkowej oraz stosunku człowieka do przyrody, a także roli
moralności i polityki w życiu. Zebrane w antologii teksty wyrażają ideologię humanitaryzmu, którą można sprowadzić do stwierdzenia, że po ludzku powinniśmy traktować każdego – tak człowieka, jak i nieczłowieka.

HENRY S. SALT (1851–1939) – angielski pisarz i działacz społeczny, jeden z pierwszych teoretyków rozwiniętej koncepcji praw zwierząt oraz ideolog humanitaryzmu. Podejmował kwestię robotniczą, walczył o ograniczenie polowań, uboju i eksperymentów na zwierzętach, agitował za pacyfizmem, wspierał sufrażystki oraz projektował reformy prawa karnego i systemu penitencjarnego. Kierowana przez niego Liga Humanitarystyczna była główną siłą nurtu etycznego w brytyjskim socjalizmie na początku XX w.

CEZARY BŁASZCZYK – adiunkt na Wydziale Prawa i Administracji Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. W działalności naukowej zajmuje się związkami prawa i polityki, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem ochrony zwierząt.
