The Rev. James Leigh Joynes was Henry Salt’s father-in-law. He was born in 1824 at Frindsbury, Kent, the son of Richard Symonds Joynes, the Rector of Gravesend.
From Eton College he went to King’s as a Scholar, won a University prize or two, and returned to Eton as a master and a Fellow of King’s in 1849.
In 1859 he married Elizabeth Johanne Unger at St George’s Hanover Square, Westminster.
Many of his pupils—among whom were Sidney Herbert (14th Earl of Pembroke), Swinburne, Lord Kinnaird, and the late Duke of Argyll—rose to high eminence.
He died on 29 June 1908 at Tunbridge Wells, Kent.
