1. Copyright and ownership

Unless otherwise stated, original content published on the Henry Salt Foundation website (henrysalt.com) is protected by copyright. This includes original articles, research, biographies, commentary, transcriptions, editorial material, website text, photographs and other content created by or for the Foundation where the relevant rights are owned or controlled by the Foundation.

The Foundation makes its research available to encourage greater understanding of Henry Stephens Salt, his family, his associates and his legacy. However, making material freely accessible online does not mean that it may be copied, reproduced or republished without permission.

Copyright belongs to the Henry Salt Foundation or the relevant copyright owner, as applicable. Some material displayed on this website, including historical documents, photographs and extracts from published works, may belong to third parties and may be subject to separate copyright or licensing conditions. The Foundation does not claim ownership of material belonging to others.

2. Permitted use

Visitors are welcome to:

  • Read and consult material on this website for personal interest, historical research and private study.
  • Refer to the Foundation’s research and findings in their own work, provided they undertake their own independent research and give appropriate acknowledgement.
  • Quote reasonable extracts for purposes such as criticism, review, academic discussion or historical commentary, where permitted by applicable copyright law.
  • Share links to pages on henrysalt.com.

When referencing the Foundation’s work, please identify the Henry Salt Foundation as the source and include a link to the relevant page wherever possible.

These permissions do not extend to reproducing substantial portions of the Foundation’s original work or republishing its content without permission.

3. Reproduction and republication without permission

The Henry Salt Foundation does not grant permission for the republication of its original website content on other websites, blogs, online archives, social media platforms or in printed or digital publications without prior written permission, except where permitted by applicable law or an existing licence.

This applies to both commercial and non-commercial use, including reproduction by historical societies, research organisations, educational organisations, publishers and individuals.

The Foundation’s original articles, biographies, research narratives, commentary, transcriptions, editorial material and photographs in which it owns or controls the relevant rights may not be copied, reproduced, adapted or republished without permission, except where permitted by applicable law or an existing licence.

Acknowledging the source, crediting the Foundation or providing a link to the original page does not, by itself, authorise republication.

The Foundation welcomes independent historical research and the citation of its published findings. However, historical facts and ideas may be used independently only insofar as doing so does not infringe copyright or other applicable rights. The Foundation’s original wording, creative presentation and other protected elements must not be reproduced in a manner that infringes copyright.

4. Photographs, illustrations and historical documents

Photographs, illustrations and historical documents require particular care. Their age, availability online or appearance on this website does not necessarily mean they are free of copyright restrictions.

Please check any copyright notices, credits or licensing information accompanying images and documents before reproducing them. Where the Foundation has permission to display material but does not own the copyright, further permission may need to be obtained from the original rights holder.

No permission to reproduce third-party material should be inferred from its inclusion on this website.

5. Research, facts and historical information

Historical facts, dates, names, events and ideas are not protected by copyright in themselves. However, original written accounts, commentary, analysis and creative arrangements of information may be protected.

Visitors are welcome to consult the Foundation’s findings and use them as a starting point for their own independent research. Where the Foundation’s research has informed published work, appropriate acknowledgement is encouraged.

Copying original text, reproducing substantial parts of an article or biography, or closely reproducing a protected presentation of research may infringe copyright. The fact that the underlying historical information is available elsewhere does not give permission to copy the Foundation’s original expression of it.

6. Unauthorised reproduction and enforcement

The Foundation takes the protection of its original work seriously.

Where material appears to have been reproduced without permission, the Foundation may contact the person, organisation or website responsible and request removal of the material, appropriate corrective action or another suitable remedy.

Where necessary, the Foundation reserves the right to pursue remedies available under applicable law in respect of material for which it owns or controls the relevant rights.

The Foundation assesses suspected infringements on a case-by-case basis, taking account of the material involved, the extent of any reproduction, the rights concerned and any applicable legal exceptions or licences.

7. Requesting permission

Requests to reproduce material should be made in writing before the material is used.

Please contact:

Email: Contact Page
Website: https://henrysalt.com/

Your request should include:

  • The URL of the relevant page and a description of the material.
  • The intended purpose and manner of use.
  • The website, publication, platform or other medium in which the material would appear.
  • Whether the proposed use is commercial or non-commercial.

Permission, where granted, applies only to the use expressly agreed. Additional uses may require separate permission.

8. Existing permissions and third-party rights

This policy does not retrospectively revoke permissions or licences previously granted by the Foundation. Existing agreements remain subject to their own terms.

Nothing in this policy is intended to restrict uses permitted by applicable copyright law, override an existing licence, or claim rights in material owned by third parties.

9. Legal notice

This policy explains the Henry Salt Foundation’s approach to copyright and reuse. It does not replace applicable legislation or determine whether a particular use constitutes copyright infringement. Copyright protection and permitted uses depend on the nature of the material, ownership of the relevant rights and the circumstances of its use.
