Elizabeth Sophia Allnatt was the maternal grandmother of Henry Salt and the wife of the barrister Charles Blake Allnatt, whom she married at Wem, Shropshire, on 17 February 1818.
Born in Ireland, Elizabeth belonged to the Möller family, whose history connected Ireland with northern European Protestant religious life. Her father, Andrew Möller of Butterston, was the son of the Reverend Olaus von Möller, who had emigrated from Flensburg to Ireland, where he served in the ministry.
Elizabeth’s sister, Ellen Maria Möller, married the Reverend John Hawksworth. His father, also named John Hawksworth, had married Elizabeth’s aunt, Maria Möller, a daughter of Olaus von Möller. These family connections linked the Möllers with Wem, Shropshire, where Elizabeth married Charles Blake Allnatt in 1818. Whether her relatives influenced her move to England is not known.
The Möller family’s history was recorded in an account published in Sir Bernard Burke’s A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland.
Elizabeth and Charles had seven children, including Ellen Matilda Allnatt, Henry Salt’s mother. Henry spent part of his childhood at his grandparents’ home at 23 The Crescent, Shrewsbury.
Elizabeth died on 2 March 1871 at 6 Keynsham Parade, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, aged 72. She was buried on 7 March at St Chad’s Church, Montford, Shropshire.
